From 1955 the model changes always came in August, meaning that model 1956 started in 8.4.55. This is very confusing, when speaking about model year and the year the car was made are two different things. Model years normally follow all the major changes.

Note new type of chassis number. The first digit ‘1' denotes type 1 (beetle). Second digit used to denote body style (eg 5 for cabrio in appropriate years). The third digit ‘5' indicates the model year 1965.

Improved heater.
